History of the Calvary Cemetery in San Antonio, Texas explained and explored. A lost cemetery that has been covered away by time.

Calvary Cemetery is one of San Antonio’s lesser known and forgotten cemeteries. This cemetery was a Catholic cemetery which belonged to Sisters Servants of The Holy Ghost & Mary Immaculate aka the Convent of The Holy Ghost. This is the Calvary Cemetery that is near I 10 (Interstate 10) and is not the same Calvary Cemetery that is near MK & T Railroad.

Sadly not much is known about this cemetery. Not much information can be discovered about Calvary Cemetery online or offline.

Calvary Cemetery was established by Sisters Servants of The Holy Ghost & Mary Immaculate aka the Convent of The Holy Ghost with the help and direction of their manager W. C. Sullivan in 1927. Calvary Cemetery was plotted and laid out on Yucca Street near I 10 (Interstate 10). W. C. Sullivan was the manager of Calvary Cemetery throughout the late 1920s. Parts of Calvary Cemetery were cancelled and separated into acreage tracks for the Coliseum Oaks subdivision/neighborhood and Artesia neighborhood on the date of January 12, 1928. (Ref: Bexar County Land Records, Document Number 99990141842)

William E. Remy deed additional acreage of land to Sisters Servants of The Holy Ghost & Mary Immaculate for cemetery expansion of Calvary Cemetery on May 21, 1951. (Ref: Bexar County Land Records, Document Number 724156)

Huberto Campos was one of the people buried at Calvary Cemetery. He was buried at Calvary Cemetery at 10:30 AM on Monday, April 28, 1969 under direction of the Alamo Funeral Home as they had conducted graveside services and his burial. (Ref: https://www.newspapers.com/newspage/58639444/)

According to records from the Bexar County Land Records online, Sisters Servants of The Holy Ghost & Mary Immaculate aka the Convent of The Holy Ghost has had liens filed against the Calvary Cemetery by the City of San Antonio for costs of cleaning the property over the course of 16 years from 2006 to 2022. Yet there appears to be no graves, tombstones, or burials that can be visibly seen in public view or from street view. This could mean any markers, tombstones, or graves might have been removed and relocated elsewhere or on the burial grounds of Sisters Servants of The Holy Ghost & Mary Immaculate aka the Convent of The Holy Ghost. According to a search of the Bexar County Appraisal District records online, Sisters Servants of The Holy Ghost & Mary Immaculate still own Calvary Cemetery. (Ref: https://bexar.trueautomation.com/clientdb/Property.aspx?cid=110&prop_id=441660)

Calvary Cemetery is located at 635 Yucca Street, San Antonio, Texas, US 78220.
