History of Mingo School in Tulsa, Oklahoma explained again.

Mingo School is one of the many forgotten schools of Tulsa, Oklahoma. However many local citizens knew about this school. This news article will explain the history behind Mingo School.

Mingo School was a school located within its own independent school district called Mingo School District prior to state hood. Economy in this area was originally based on coal mining. Coal mining propsered in the area much of the 19th century.

Mingo School was built in 1886 in a single story building. Mingo School operated as an elementary school called Mingo Elementary School which was a 1-8 school. After 8th grade is when students transferred over to Tulsa Public Schools.

By 1920, Mingo School was a four-room school with an auditorium. A teacher age was built beside the school building. By 1929, the old Mingo Elementary School building was becoming outmoded and outdated. So a new building was required. A new school building for Mingo Elementary School was built in 1930. The main building was built in 1930.

The newer portion of the building was built in 1968. 5 extra additional classrooms were built in this portion of the building.

In the 1970s, a gym was built south of the property. Enrollment was dropping noticeably by the 1970s. In 1972, Mingo School District was annexed to the city of Tulsa. Mingo School students began attending Tulsa Public Schools.

Mingo Elementary School received $131,968 dollars in a noise pollution lawsuit against the city of Tulsa. Mingo School sued the city because students were disturbed by noise from a street construction project nearby, just 37 feet away from the school campus. The city of Tulsa offered to pay $4,100 dollars in settlement fees, but school refused it. Noise pollution from Mingo Street

Enrollment significantly declined in the 1980s. Throughout the 80s is when enrollment continued to drop. Student population was lower than 300. The 1983-1984 school year had 246 students. Mingo School District brought in 30 students from Tulsa Public Schools to increase enrollment.

Enrollment significantly declined in the 1990s. During the 1990-1991 school year, Mingo School had 156 students enrolled. During the 1991-1992 school year, Mingo School had 154 students enrolled. Mingo School closed in 1994.

In October 29, 2007, Mingo School had been burned in a mysterious fire. The school was demolished in 2009 after a fire destroyed much of the older building earlier in 2007. Only an empty field of grass remains. Today it is now owned by the Tulsa Airport Authority who owns the land property along with Tulsa International Airport.

  1. Enrollment at Mingo School was 150 in 1968. There were numerous rent houses in the community and the enrollment varied widely from one year to the next. My 1st Grade class had 40 students. My 8th grade class had 20.
