Stewart House Hotel is/was one of the many “house hotels” and hotels of Deseronto, Ontario. This news article will explore the history behind Stewart House Hotel. This is one of Canada’s forgotten hotels.
The Stewart House Hotel was housed in none other than the former O'Connor House. The O'Connor House predated the Stewart House Hotel by many years dating back pre-1871.
The Stewart House opened on Prince Street facing Main Street as the 4-story building was located on/at the adjacent corner of Main Street & Prince Street in the year of 1873. The building was originally 3 stories in height. Additions and renovations were made in 1874 to where the hotel building was 4 stories tall. Balconies with no facade covering was added some years later.
According to Manitoba Free Press, The Stewart House changed hands in 1884. “The Stewart House has changed hands and is now under the management of Messrs. Hunt & Ranee.” (Ref: Manitoba Free Press, Page 3, Thursday, February 21, 1884)
Naylor's Theatre could be seen in the background of Main Street in 1923. There was a sidewalk connecting to Stewart House Hotel despite Main Street having not been a paved street yet. Stewart House Hotel had been “city hotel” and “house hotel” by then. (Ref: https://www.flickr.com/photos/deserontoarchives/7740869976)
