Exploring Blount Cave in Waco, Texas.

Blount Cave is a man-made cave which is also one of the lesser known and forgotten caves of Waco, Texas. This news article will explain what Blount Cave was. Sadly not much information is known about this cave. 



Mrs. R. R. Blount (Mary Blount) and Mr. R. R. Blount (Reynolds Redden Blount) dug a man-made cave in their back yard for their Pekingese dogs in November of 1951. This cave was dug during the cold winter of 1951. Dogs and groundhogs inhabited this cave. However they were not native species of this cave. (Ref: https://www.newspapers.com/newspage/43643849/)

“The only groundhogs we know about around here come from Tennessee as gifts to Mr. and Mrs. R. R. Blount of 1214 Webster Avenue. The Blounts built them a nice cave, in the back yard, and about two months ago, when winter was about to get started, Mister Groundhog (his name is Joe) when out and hasn’t been back since.”



 

Property of Blount Cave was located on sold in 1968 to 3 different land owners. Mrs. Mary Blount sold and transferred the land property to L M Souther, Ora Ethel, and Bessie W Gonzales for a price of $2,500.00 dollars in November 11, 1968. Bessie W Gonzales was made the owner after the transaction was finalized. (Ref: https://www.newspapers.com/newspage/61715294/)

Bessie W Gonzales owned the land where Blount Cave was for several years. Bessie W Gonzales sold the land to Jesse Contreras and Esther Contreras around 1983. Jesse Contreras conveyed the land property to Esther Contreras on a warranty deed in 2003. (Ref: McLennan County Land Deeds, Instrument #2003015494)

Esther Contreras put Blount Cave along with the land property into an estate of hers called Estate of Esther Contreras in 2018, prior to her death in 2020. The Estate of Esther Contreras deeded the land property to Alicia Rodriguez on a warranty deed in 2020. Alicia Rodriguez is the current owner of Blount Cave. Now Blount Cave has been leveled and buried beneath underground. The exact date of when Blount Cave was buried leveled beneath ground is and remains unknown.

Blount Cave was located at 1214 Webster Avenue, Waco, Texas, US 76706.
