Exploring Goat Field Sink. One of Austin’s lesser known sinkholes.

Goat Field Sink is one of the lesser known sinkholes of Austin, Texas and is one of Austin’s lesser known sinkholes. This news article will explain what Goat Field Sink is and explore the geological studies of this sinkhole. 


Goat Field Sink is a soil-piping sinkhole which served as a former drainage for West Davis Pond site in the late 1990’s, but is no longer exposed. Runoff from Davis Lane flowed into Goat Field Sink at one period in time. This sinkhole’s geological formation is composed of Del Rio Clay and Edwards Limestone. Here is the history of Goat Field Sink.

Goat Field Sink is a soil-piping sinkhole which once served as a former drainage for West Davis Pond site in the late 1990’s. The sinkhole had been still serving as a drainage basin by 1999. (Ref: https://www.austintexas.gov/watershed_protection/publications/document.cfm?id=196480)

G. O. Slaughter originally owned the land where Goat Field Sink is. G. O. Slaughter sold the land to Timothy F. Foarde around 1988. Timothy F. Foarde the land to Cullen Center Bank on a substitute trustee deed for $3,975,00 in 1989. Cullen Center Bank sold the sinkhole property to Richard S. Hill, and Lance Kent Jr. sometime before 1996. They leased the sinkhole to the City of Austin during this time. Goat Field Sink is a soil-piping sinkhole which was serving as a drainage for West Davis Pond site in the late 1990’s. Richard S. Hill and Lance Kent Jr. along with W W DEERFIELD LTD and LUKERS INC sold Goat Field Sink and the surrounding property on a special warranty deed to SIMPSON BRODIE TWO LIMITED PARTNERSHIP on the date of August 31, 1999. (Ref: Travis County Deed Records, Instrument #1999097439)


The sinkhole had been still serving as a drainage basin by 2000. Goat Field Sink was no longer exposed by 2003. SIMPSON BRODIE TWO LIMITED PARTNERSHIP currently owns Goat Field Sink. Ref: Travis County Deed Records, Instrument #1999097438)
