Short history behind Juneau Senior College explored.

Juneau Senior College is one of the lesser known colleges of Juneau, Alaska. This news article will explain and explore some of the history regarding Juneau Senior College.

Juneau Senior College was established in the 1970s sometime during the 1971-1972 semester on the outskirts of Juneau. During this time Juneau Senior College offered upper-division and graduate programs (Ref: https://uaf.edu/catalog/files/UAF-Catalog_1971-72.pdf)

When the University of Alaska made a decision to close Juneau-Douglas Community College in 1979,  Juneau-Douglas Community College had combine some of its programs into Juneau Senior College during an executive session when senate was in session. Juneau Senior College received in $127,683 dollars in financial assistance during the 1978-1979 school semester. A large amount of money and financial assistance for a senior college during that time. (Ref: https://books.google.com/books?id=W4YIPSYKKHAC&pg=PA1774&lpg=PA1774)

Juneau Senior College received in $71,181 dollars in financial assistance during the 1980-1981 school semester. By this time, Juneau Senior College had been receiving significantly less financial assistance from the government. This was a result in government spending during the oil crisis of 1974 which led to cuts in funding for colleges and universities receiving financial assistance. Juneau Senior College was consolidated into University of Alaska Southeast in 1981 during the 1981-1982 school semester. That is how and why Juneau Senior College was consolidated into three separately accredited universities that make up the University of Alaska statewide system.
