Horizon Airport is one of the many forgotten airports of San Antonio, Texas. Some of the history has been long forgotten.
Horizon Airport first began as Lakefield Airport on January 1945. 107 acres of land were purchased by City of San Antonio for an airport as Davis Airport and Stinson Municipal Airport had began getting too much air traffic. 3 grass runways were platted and aligned. Horizon Airport was opened to the public in April 1945. Many general aviation planes began using this small airport when Stinson Municipal Airport and Davis Airport were getting crowded and were receiving too much air traffic. There was no commercial service despite being set up as a public airport. What is different about this airport are the grass runways and wild hogs which roam around the perimeter. At first, the runway layout of Horizon Airport was laid out in the design of the letter ‘A’ and a teepee at the same time. The runway layout of Horizon Airport is commonly known by pilots for its teepee design.
The horizontal runway in the middle was removed in 1963 while the runways were being narrowed down in size. The runways were no longer as wide as they formally were. The name of this airport changed from Lakefield Airport to Horizon Airport in April 1968. This airport has operated under a handful of names such as Lakefield Airport, Lakeview Airport, New Horizons Airport, and Horizons Airport.
What is different about this airport are the grass runways and wild hogs which roam around the perimeter. TXDOT has reported this online. (Ref: ftp://ftp.dot.state.tx.us/pub/txdot-info/avn/airport_directory/74r.pdf)
Horizon Airport continues to operate today as a public airport which is privately owned by Toudouze Investments. General aviation planes are the usual planes that can be seen at this airport. There are 2 grass runways. Overall Horizon Airport a nice grass airport located south of San Antonio.
Horizon Airport is located at 13680 Pleasanton Road, San Antonio, Texas, US 78221.
