Big June - Straight Jackin’ single review

Straight Jackin’ was a single put out on cassette in 1992 by Repo Records. Repo Ric was Big June's manager at the time. Production was done by Repo Ric, Dr. Devious (Dr. Dev), and Steve Vicious. Songs on this single have the gangsta rap theme about robberies, shootings, killings, and jackings.

Big June Nigga is a self-explanatory track about who Big June is. Big June Nigga samples More Bounce To The Ounce by Zapp. Both Steve Vicious and Repo Ric produced this track. That’s why you can hear VMF’s sound all over Big June Nigga with that heavy G-Funk sound.

Big June is a young nigga from Southeast San Diego, California. Big June is on a mission. While he is on this mission, his eyes are faded from a fat blunt of that endo. He’s got half in his sack. But he’s going to save some for his homie Lil Lunch Beef. But that’s the home and wants to be high like Big June. They meet at the I at 8 o’clock. They get a 40 ounce of that Olde English. Big June keeps a strap when he rolls the streets. He’s ready to blast when he sees a fool trying to creep.

Now Big June describes himself as a hardheaded motherfucker. He’s feels crazy with the intentions of always killing. Big June keeps his Dickies™sagging low. Messing with Big June and believe me, you will come up short. Fuck with Big June and you will come up short. He has a brew. So now his situated. He poured some brew onto the curb for the deceased homies.

Moving forward, Big June caught this fool slippin’ and he busted at his ass when he should have waited. The batterram is rolling deep. Big June cuts the lights on his car parks in a vacant lot. He tossed the dope and bud under a tree along with the gat. And now he peels out quick with the 40 in his lap. Big June sees a bitch with a fat pussy. So he went up in it. He went to her pad but quickly left. Right as Big June walked out the door, she started pulling on his sleeve. That’s what you get for fucking around with Big June Nigga.

Notice how Big June gave props, a shoutout, and a reference to San Diego rapper CC. CC and Big June were close homies who earned each others respect.
It was in this verse:
you know my homie CC is drinking MD
another motherfucker down with 61 n-i-n-e

Straight Jackin' is the next track. On this song called Straight Jackin’, Big June talks about committing robberies and doing home invasions. Big June talks about robbing and jacking people for they shit. Big June went on a mission.

Big June is a young nigga from Southeast San Diego, California. He is dressed in brown, black, and red getting ready to invade someone’s home to commit a robbery. SESD is imprinted on his back. His eyes are always looking faded. He had the single Big June Nigga in his ride and so he played it. He has his day plan headed for Southeast San Diego. San Diego PD took his picture because of the fact he was associating himself with gangs. San Diego PD shouldn’t have to ask Big June what set he’s from. So they let him go but confiscated his bud.

Big June heard some funky sounds while strolling in front of Lincoln Park. (That is the Lincoln Big June is referring to.) It was Luke in a Caddilac. So now Big June proceeds to flag him down. It’s 11:15 AM. Big June tells Luke to hurry up as Morse High School is letting out for lunch. Big June and Luke arrive at the school at 11:28 AM. Shannon Bo watched over the car for Big June. (Shannon Bo just happened to be there at the time.) Black Sid started coming because he heard Big June flowing. He was dressed in all black with his rag. Big June had some bud but police confiscated that from him. Ain’t that a bitch! Big June is stressin’ too. Black Sid tossed Big June the gat and said “There’s only one thing left to do.” Big June said “What?” Black Sid looked at Big June and started laughing. He said “Kick back, June. Because we’re straight jackin’.” Now we are waiting for Shannon Bo and Black Sid so Big June & them so they can commit robberies and home invasions. So get ready for the jackin’!

Big June takes off his brown Dickies™and now he is in all black. Now we are waiting for Shannon and Black Sid so they can commit robberies and home invasions. Shannon Bo and Black Sid pull up in a Model T Ford. Big June states he can’t go jacking sober. So the pull out the 8 bottle. They started getting drunk. Now Big June wants to go to Trose so he can get some dip. They this old fool strolling, high rolling with a lot of money. Big June hopped out the Caddilac and put a shank to his dome. He wasn’t scared of the knife so Big June pulled out the gat. He thought it was fake so he pulled it back. Shannon said “Give it up or your ass I’ll get. And if I have to, Im’ma shoot off your little dick.” He pulled out some $10’s and $20s. Big June walked away like nothing happened. He put his gat in the glove compartment inside his Cadillac. Big June has prepared himself for another mission.

At this present moment, Big June is high as fuck. But his brain is flowing smooth. He is still stable enough to pull a jack move. Nina Ross is the boss when Big June’s on the jack tip. He is scoping out a home to invade. Just his luck. Nobody’s even home. Big June tosses possessions from that home into U-Haul truck in the back. Big June has prepared himself for another mission yet again.

Nothin' But A Come Up is about puttin' in work and doin' dirt. Basically it's committing robberies and killings. There’s a lot of niggas jealous of Big June because he’s getting paid to rap and rip the mic. The beats are chaotic. Repo Ric produced Nothin' But A Come Up.

Big June - Da Plug album review

Da Plug was an EP that was put out on cassette and CD in 1994 by Repo Records. Repo Ric was Big June's manager at the time and Repo Ric also ran his record label called Repo Records and a hypeman for his Repo Boxing. Big June already had 2 cassette singles out called Big June Nigga and Straight Jackin' in 1992 which were in included on this  and the Nightrider EP. Production was done by Repo Ric, Dr. Devious (Dr. Dev), and Steve Vicious.

First off is the intro to Night Rider which repeats Big June N-I Double G-A over and over on a sample of More Bounce To The Ounce by Zapp. Screams, screeches, tires peel outs, gunshots, ammo, and bullets can be heard in the loud background. You won’t like it too much because it gets annoying real quick.

Night Rider is a song off of another Big June EP on cassette called Nightrider. Big June was a young rider creepin' in the night. So don't get caught slippin'! On this song Big June talks about robbing and jacking people for they shit.  (He doesn't rap about this stuff anymore. So don't worry!) Big June was a young rider creepin' in the night. He does it at night because that's when young motherfuckers get gunned down. He keeps 16 in the clip. He’s not the one to get caught slipping’ and push 25 to life in prison. Big June is from the wicked ass Southeast streets of San Diego when the gangstas kick it! So don't get caught slippin'!

Da Plug was a swell song. It was good. It is a well memorable song with huge heavy bass. The guaranteed bass will leave a long lasting impact on your memory. The remix of Straight Jackin' is an unpolished unfinished version of a remix with a More Bounce To The Ounce by Zapp with that G-Funk heavy sound. Battle Rap was Big June spitten rhymes fast! It's only 2 minutes long though.

Howard Hewett - Howard Hewett album review

Singer–songwriter and former lead singer of Shalamar Howard Hewett released his self-titled album on Elektra in 1990 on Elektra. This album featured the hit singles "Show Me" and "If I Could Only Have That Day Back". At the very end of this album, Howard Hewett showcased his religious side with songs such as Jesus and The Ten Commandments of Love. After all, Jesus was the most religious song off the album. The title was a dead giveaway. The Howard Hewett album is seriously a melodic masterpiece with good soul music. Howard Hewett fans believe this is best solo album.

Groove Theory - The Answer album review

The Answer was/is the final album to be released by R&B duo Groove Theory. The album was recorded after original member Amel Larrieuix left the group to start a solo career for her self in other words. She was replaced by singer/songwriter Makeda Davis later that year. The album undersold what its standards were expected.

Incorporated musical styles used had a more commercial sound than the previous debut album did meaning that The Answer album had a more commercial pop sound than an underground dance music club sound. Take notice of the commercial sound for instance as an example. The album had a more contemporary  R&B approach. The Answer is the creation of a new sound and a new groove as explained on The Answer Album Sampler that was released in 2000 on CD.

II Da Club has an urban sound with a commercial touch. The urban sound here is similar to rap music. These beats are similar to what you would hear in rap music. However the beat is slow. The rap sounds meets soul music and pop on II Da Club.

Hedonism is a hectic hedonistic track. The programmed beats have an upbeat tempo to them. An incorporated touch of rock from a guitar is used on Hedonism. Things do get hectic on Hedonism as it is a song about love. Yet the melody is subtle. Vocals used are harmonic.

The single 4shure (which was eventually molded into an EP by Columbia Records as an effort on their part) charted at #97 on the Billboard Charts in 2000. 4shure as a single received moderate airplay on radio stations across the US nation on a nationwide scale. It was the choice of Columbia Records to make 4shure into an EP. That choice was probably not the best though. However it's not all that bad.

4shure had an upbeat dance music vibe to it especially with the percussion and beats. Groove Theory was known for incorporating dance music into their songs and 4shure is no exception to this case. Davis takes over on the vocals for 4shure. It was due to the 4shure single charting in low numbers that The Answer album sold poorly.

If I Knew is a sad mournful soul song that is a slow jam. The mood of this song has a real sad negative vibe. The soulful singing adds to the effects of sadness and sorrow of this song. If I Knew is a slow jam. The lyrics are very repetitive with the hooks repeating itself. The repetitive lyrics make If I Knew a sappy love song. That is the flaw for If I Knew.

Makeda wonders if she could have kept her mouth shut. She regrets now that she didn't keep her mouth shut. (She needs someone to tell her that apparently.) Why couldn't she keep her mouth shut? Makeda is lying here in tears wishing her lover was there. She could have been loved but she fucked up by getting caught up. If she knew better, she would have kept her mouth shut. When it comes to love, she needs to keep her mouth closed.

It was due to the 4shure single charting in low numbers, conflicts in the group, and conflicts with Columbia Records that The Answer never saw an official release. The album kept getting pushed back several times which led the duo asking to be released from their contract with Columbia Records. Columbia Records was moving away from the dance music scene and focusing more on the burgeoning pop market at the time.

While the official retail album of The Answer remains unreleased to this day, promotional copies were released to music executives and to DJs at radio stations for review and of course airplay to promote the album. Yes full promotional copies and editions of The Answer album really exist.
