The Shacks - The Shacks EP EP review

Mix ‘60s progressive rock and ‘70s psychedelic rock and you have the sounds of The Shacks. The Shacks are quite similar to Lil Cap’n Travis and The 13th Floor Elevators. It’s if Neil Young were to meet The Black Keys or if Neil Young were to meet MGMT. This is no conventional type of rock or rock band at that. The Shacks released their debut EP on CD and vinyl on Big Crown Records in 2016. The digital EP for the The Shacks - The Shacks EP contains 9 songs with 2 bonus tracks. The 2 bonus tracks are Strange Boy and No Surprise.

‘60s progressive rock meet ‘70s psychedelic rock on the song Strange Effect, which is no surprise because the song covers The Kink - Strange Effect. Henceforth the hazy humor laced over distorted twangy guitar notes. The song does have strange yet desirable effect on its listeners. So far this is the best cover version of The Kinks - Strange Effect. The Shacks did wonderful performing this excellent cover song.

Sharon Wise has an Enya vibe in her voice. She also has a Tweet vibe in her voice as well. Her whisper-vocals breeze through the speakers. You can hear the youthfulness in her voice. You will love the real dreamy sound. Notice the cool chord changes. This song certainly has an edge.

The song plays in synchronicity as they blend and loop with each other. This song is a song that will get stuck in your head and you will have to research and look it up online to listen to over and over again repeatedly. The synchronicity of this song is what really stands out.

Strange Effect is their most well known song(s) to date. The music video for Strange Effect reached over 100,000 views on YouTube since 2016. The music video has since surpassed over 300,000 views!

The music video has appeared on YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram reaching up towards 20 million views worldwide combined.! The lead actor in the spot was all over the place in the music video.

Orchids is a suspense ridden, sax driven song with dark lyricism. Orchids is truly a beautiful original song. The song is about heartbreak and sorrow driven with such fearless emotion. Overall Orchids as a song has a groovy sound despite the dark vibe and tone. The chords don’t change or alternate that much. The rhythm section is perfect in orchestration.

Sharon Wise has an Enya vibe in her voice and also has a Tweet vibe in her voice as well. The youthfulness in her voice really help this song stand out on its own. Leon Michels produced Orchids with Max Shrager. Although Leon Michels take most of the credit.

Orchid is one of their lesser known songs to date. The music video for Orchid reached over 30,000 views on YouTube since 2017. The music video has since surpassed over 33,000 views!

Sharon Wise laid down her vocals perfectly on Rain. Rain is orchestrated in a pitch-perfect melody soothing to the ears. Sharon Wise has an Enya vibe in her voice. Her voice is a breath of fresh air compared to what’s on the radio these days. The freshness of this track is what really stands out the most.

Reggae meets rock on Hands In Your Pocket. Frightnrs represent the rhythm section backing Sharon’s voice with Max Shrager on guitar. The song is a pitch-perfect melody. Laying down a pitch-perfect song is an easy task for Sharon Wise. Max Shrager does half of the acoustics. The reggae sound on this track is what really stands out the most.

Big June & Brotha Lynch Hung ‎– Young Riders single review

Young Riders was a single Big June released in 1995 on cassette from Repo Records that contained different versions of Night Rider and Young Riders. The single is a maxi-single released on maxi-cassette. Production was done by Repo Ric, King Sandman, Torcha Chamba, and Coze. Yes Sandman the Hispanic rapper produced the maxi-single.

Big June and Brotha Lynch Hung are on the track Young Riders from 1995. Young Riders is a dedication to all the G's. It’s a Blood and Crip collaboration on Young Riders with Big June repping the Blood side and Brotha Lynch Hung repping the Crip side. It’s a San Diego Rap/Sacramento rap collaboration too as well.

Big June was a young rider creepin' in the night. He does it at night because that's when young motherfuckers get gunned down. He keeps 16 in the clip. He’s not the one to get caught slipping and push 25 to life in prison. He’s still a young OG from the set. Big June is from the wicked ass Southeast streets of San Diego when the gangstas kick it! So don't get caught slippin'! Big June and Brotha Lynch Hung are the real riders.

Realystic Dream (Too Sane) is an insane rap song by Too Sane where he is rapping for 80% of the track. This is really more Too Sane’s track than Big June’s. Big June kicks a verse or 2.

Honestly this single is packaged more as a compilation rather than an actual single. Had 2 Gat Ya (Remix) by Brotha Lynch Hung and Realystic Dream (Too Sane) by Too Sane are key examples telling so. If you are looking for just straight up Big June, then this single is not suggested for you.

3/5***.

Mike Etheridge - Master Plan album review

Master Plan was the debut album from Mike Etheridge aka Mike E. Master Plan was an album that was supposed to be released on Capitol Records in 2000, but due to the demise of the Teddy Riley label Lil Man Records the album was only released as a promo on CD and not as an official release in stores. Mike E tried to define R&B/Soul for Lil Man Records but couldn’t due to its demise from internal problems within the company. (There was an additional album sampler which had 5 songs, 2 of which did not make final cut.)

Mike E gets deep by delving into the subject of deep spiritual commitment on the song Look in the Water. This is point in the album where Mike E gets really deep. He gets in touch with his spiritual side in a very deep way. Not too many singers do that.

One More Chance is bound together by themes of forgiveness and reconciliation which is why the themes are forgiveness and reconciliation. Hence the appropriate title for this song.

Don’t Change Your Mind has the themes of forgiveness and reconciliation. Don’t Change Your Mind deals with reconciliation rather than anger, emotional heartbreak, or distrust. No, the song Don’t Change Your Mind is not a sad love song about or of emotional heartbreak.

No Doubt was a song produced by Chad Hugo of The Neptunes. Notice the awesome banging rap beats? No Doubt is about respect for the family and home.

What Can I Do was a song produced by Pharell Williams of The Neptunes. Notice the awesome banging rap beats? Episode features labelmate and female rapper Queen Pen. Yes the same Queen Pen from the Motown label.

Lil Wyte - No Sick Days album review

Lil Wyte was happy musically when he wrote this album as stated in the liner notes for this album. Lil Wyte never left his roots because he was groomed by the biggest producers in the industry which are DJ Paul and Juicy J. No Sick Days is a personal favorite album of his. He recorded the album for himself as stated in the liner notes. (I did it for ME.) This is the first album he has recorded for himself.
The album consists of well put together classics such as It’s 4:20, Soon You’ll Understand, Run Up, No Sick Days, and Space. It’s a privilege to hear music like this because not everyone gets to hear this type of album. Lil Wyte is also Memphis rap at its finest.

The irony that a producer would produce a track called “It’s 4:20” is truly hilarious! Ironically the producers name is Stoner (Thomas Toner). Although the track is produced by Stoner, Lil Wyte wrote the track. The track itself is the highlight of this album with its stoner humor, drug references, songwriting, production, and irony. Prouduction was key towards making this song a classic.

Run Up with La Chat is gangsta rap track with a snap music vibe. Honestly anything with La Chat featured on it is going to be an instant underground classic because, let’s face it, La Chat is a legendary female rapper from Memphis, Tennessee.

Soon You’ll Understand is a track that was dedicated to the daughters of Lil Wyte. Soon You’ll Understand is dedicated to his daughters McKenzie and Cali. It takes a lot for a man to put his feelings out for the world to see clearly what he feels or believes.

No Sick Days is clearly the title track for this Lil Wyte album. DJ Burn One produced the track No Sick Days while Lil Wyte wrote it. Lil Wyte wrote this track himself with no outside help or influences from his peers. Or any outside influences at that.
