This is Michael Mixerr. Today I will review Mac Ten - The Whole Ten Yards.
Old school rap meets the urban inner city sound of gangsta rap on The Whole Ten Yards album. Despite the fact The Whole Ten Yards sounds outdated for 1993, it’s good. Mac Ten is Grand Rapids rap at its finest. Mac Ten has a similar flow and iconic style of rapping similar to Redrum781 of Bangin’ On Wax. In fact, Mac Ten is very similar to Redrum781 in terms of vocals. If you listen closely, you can understand this comparison made. Grand Rapids rappers Paperthyn and Brother Bat are all over this album. Mac Ten is Larry Bracey from Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Mac Ten is the nearly the next best thing in Grand Rapids rap next to Brother Bat, Paperthyn, Governor Slugwell, Rick Chyme, TruPhonetiks, and Iceman J.
MF is a whack lackluster rap track over an annoyingly warped sample of The Bee Gee’s - Stayin Alive song. Listen closely and you’ll notice the warped guitar notes that sample The Bee Gee’s - Stayin Alive. The flaws for this track would be the warped sample and lyrics.
A news report in audio format is played after MF about a gang related homicide on a track called News. 4 victims were supposed targets. 3 of the victims were severely beaten with crowbars and chains. Neighbors say it was a gang fight. Police have detained 2 suspects. Lt. Dale Winters says they are looking for more. One resident explains that the city of Grand Rapids is the type of place where you can’t walk down your own street anymore because it’s dangerous.
The dopest cut is Life Of The Mac 10! Life Of The Mac 10 is gangsta rap in its realist raw form over a funk sample.
Mac Ten is very similar to Redrum781 in terms of vocals especially on this track. If you listen closely, you can understand this comparison made. The bass hits super hard and heavy. The beats are crazy! Life Of The Mac 10 is raw gangsta rap. Mac Ten leaves niggaz brainless with gangsta battle raps.
In My City is a battle rap type of song. In My City samples Nucleus - Jam On It and Ice Cube -AmeriKKKa's Most Wanted. The bass hits super hard and heavy settling your speakers. The beats are crazy as usual! The vinyl cuts and breakbeats are superb. That’s the word! In My City gangsta rap in its raw form.
Get with the game because fools get got (shot) where Mac Ten comes from. At night the Tech 9’s go ratatat which are shots from an ’82 Cadillac. Someone is dead. Better run because here comes the one time. One time busted in your pad looking for the dope and the mac ten. But all they find is a couple of kilos. Mac Ten grew up in the heart of his city on Prospect Avenue. The location in the heart of the city Mac Ten is referring to is Prospect Avenue which is near Lafayette Avenue. That’s the only hood that he claims. Mac Ten grew up in the G-Rap era.
At this point in the song, Mac Ten continues to give props to various neighborhoods in Grand Rapids. Mac Ten give props to his homies off of Kalamazoo Avenue. Standing on a corner. Sipping off a cold brew. Venice Street gets mentioned. Baxter too. The boys off Nickerson kill for a cause and not just random killing.
As we roll on, Brother Bat raps a gangsta verse. Brother Bat is known in Grand Rapids as the brother with the chrome gat and chrome steel bat. Brother Bat (Troy Evans) was another rapper from the same street (Prospect Avenue) as Mac Ten. He is from Grand Rapids.
