KD Station was in the middle of a largely vacant area and was visible from a long distance away located in the Union Stockyards. The giant long monolithic building was approximately one square city block and was at least 5 stories tall if not taller.
Kermit D. and Vicky Lohry remodeled most of its first 4 floors and the basement into a unique historic shopping mall. It was active as a mall until mid-2004. The building was red-tagged by the city on night of June 30, 2004 but no information was given as to why. Tenants received or were given eviction notices without prior warning or written notice. Tenants were given 2 weeks to move out.
Sioux City Inspection Services Division declared KD Station unsafe and unfit for occupancy in April 2008 after finding citing a severe roof leak and the owners' indication the building would not be maintained or improved. The severe roof leak and high maintenance costs led to the demise of KD Station. The building extended to north in an area which is now a vacant lot adjacent to the stockyards of Union Stockyards.
