Mixerr Album Reviews #1,663

FOD - Raw is a raw gutter Flint rap album that came from the underground music scene. Their raps are raw and deadly. The album itself is a raw rap album which is a classic to its own right. FOD is known for their raw energy and deep devotion to the reality side of life.

The album was released by MMM Records (Triple M) and distributed by Boomin Records in 1995. (The album was later re-released by RapBall Records. This album sold over 60,000 units mainly in the Midwest and Southern United States underground. By the end of 1995, Raw sold over 70,000 units underground coming close to 78,000 units. Raw took the underground market by storm.

FOD is Faces of Death from BucTown (Beecher, Michigan which is next to Flint, Michigan). FOD is Cap, Tuck, Big Chief, and H.Point. (FOD later was reduced as a duo consisting of Cap and Tuck.) Here is what Faces of Death stands for.: “We as humans have faces that are slowly dying. We are destined to be faces of death.”

Now for those who did not know, FOD was formally Mentally Dasturbed. The same Mentally Dasturbed that dropped the Life of A Criminal album in 1993 on cassette.

What’s interesting about the production aspect of this album is that DJ Clay did not produced this album nor was he hands on with FOD as he was with all the other artists Boomin Records distributed for. It was Big Chief who served as producer for the album as he did with their 1993 album. He was the project coordinator for the entire album. Dalo of Top Authority produced some songs on this FOD album.

If you were expecting a full album, then you will be solely disappointed as the album’s duration in only 28 minutes in time. Its short duration makes this FOD album more into an EP than it does an actual full length album. More songs could have been added such as all their songs from the Mentally Dasturbed album.

Harvest Time serves as the introduction. The introduction takes place during a weed session. The quartet discusses expanding their album sales on a nationwide scale. They begin talking about expanding distribution. To the West, South, East Coast, and Midwest is where FOD wants to market their album. Harvest Time is raw uncut Flint dope which is dope shit.

Harvest Time uses a sample from Mentally Dasturbed - Lossn My Mind and The D.O.C. - The D.O.C. & The Doctor. The drum programming and sequencing samples the rhythmic patterns of The D.O.C. - The D.O.C. & The Doctor also.

Whuts Go N On is about what’s going on in the city of Flint. Both members of Top Authority make guest appearances on Whuts Go N On.

Just because a brother is trying to come up, people start acting ill. So much pressure is on another level. Fools be fightin. People fight over nothing in a city such as this one. Step up and load your gauge up. Flint is a city plagued with crime, poverty, and violence.

5th Street was produced by Dalo and Big Chief in 1995. Big Chief provides the additional vocals. The drum programming and sequencing sample Brotha Lynch Hung - 24 Deep. The beats and bass really stand out astonishingly. The song is aimed at wannabe G’s and police.

5th Street begins with a bangin ass beat. FOD is riding 4 deep all locced out with the cop killer Big Chief. They hit up town. A driveby is in progress. 14 people were shot from a glock. Now they go pull over their vehicle on 5th Street in the 5th Ward neighborhood of Flint. Police feel the wrath of the AK. They let their brains

Tuck has no love for cops. Especially the undercover cop who is on the block slanging rocks (cocaine). Flint is a city plagued with crime, poverty, and violence. People fight over nothing in a city such as this one.

If We Gon Smoke is a song to smoke a blunt to and get drunk to. If We Gon Smoke was produced by Dalo of Top Authority.

Shots Out is a track which calms down the albums mood due to its mid tempo vibe. The track is perfect for you to chill to. Co-P (Corey Peterson) produced the track and did the drum programming.

I rate this album, Raw, 4/5****!
