Patience is a hood classic filled with melodic tunes laced gangsta rap verses with funky drum beats. Songs in this album uses a hodgepodge of samples from television ads in songs such as Life and The Drunk. This Selby Hood album has some of the finest, pure and unfiltered raw gangsta rap to ever come out of Flint, Michigan.
Despite the low quality productions and low quality sound of the Patience album, the listening experience for this album was quite enjoyable. If you give this album a chance by listening to it, you can relate to the pain, experience, stories, and messages Selby Hood is giving out then you'll understand why I recommend this album for any of the underground rap fans out there. 95% of the albums that come out today don't even come close to holding a candle to the Patience album. That's real talk!
This Selby Hood shit is quite eerie brooding and similar to Esham with his acid rap style that is not very common. A handful of rappers from Flint were copying the acid rap sound before Jake The Flake came out with Flint Thugs Compilation in 1998. Selby Hood is an example of that grimey acid rap.
With that said… Everyone in Selby Hood and from Selby Hood was bumpin' this cassette tape back in the mid 90s! Whether it be in traffic at the stoplights, in the park, living room, inside the dance halls, or just in the bedroom. Many rappers and rap groups were trying to mimic the acid rap sound of Esham, Natas, TNT, Hasan The Sinister, Dice, Snypaz, Bone Skanless, and The Dayton Family.
This album was released on cassette from Black Sunshine Entertainment back in 1995. Patience was produced as a demo cassette before becoming an album. The cassette was teal colored and manufactured by Disc Makers.
Selby Hood was a local gangsta rap group that originated from the former Selby Elementary School located in the Northside of Flint, Michigan in 1991 which consisted of six dudes named Gargamel (Melvin Nappier), Cutt (Curtis Nappier), Mike Jarrett, Macy Dre (Broomstic), Cheese, and D along with more members from Selby Hood. Selby Hood is an enterprise of the rawest rappers and gangsters of Flint. Selby Hood is located on the Westside of Flint, Michigan.
Selby Hood had changed their name from Selby Hood Productions on their previous debut album Get Yo Booty Licked from 1992 to Selby Hood in 1995 on their sophomore album Patience in order to modernize with the changes in musical style. That album was filled with booty rap and sex rap filled with symbols of sexism along with the baby mama drama. Selby Hood had mimicked the style and culture of Miami bass for the Get Yo Booty Licked album.
Life starts off the Stress side of the Patience cassette. It is a Broomstic solo where only he performs. Life is all about the experiences and situations that members of Selby Hood face everyday on a daily basis. Life is often filled with stress and depression. Sometimes aggression. Life is filled with emotional rain. No matter what the downfalls are in life we must keep uprising.
The song starts off in a chopped and screwed style of music at the very beginning. The song starts off with the following lyrics, “playa hatas been in my face for a while/but I’ve been peepin’ it for a while, crocodile”
The chopped and screwed intro to Life breaks off into a disruption of laughter and talking. Chatter and conversation goes for about just longer than a minute. The song finally starts 30 seconds into the song. Broomstic finally gets started at 2:06 into the song.
Broomstic does not have a driver’s license and platy of warrants out for him because of his criminal behavior. Life is just life to him. He shows hatred towards the Flint Vice cops and Flint Vice Squad. He isn’t going to put his life on pause for law enforcement. Also he is looking for white chicks as he wonders who’s going to suck his erect dick next. The bills got him ill.
All Broomstic wants to do is live his full life the way he wants to. He wants to do whatever he wants. So many niggaz in Selby Hood done changed. But he will always stay black and alway be a hippi. He will always remain a member of Black Hippiz. He lets niggaz know they can’t fuck with him.
Broomstic is tired of being broke while living in a miserable cycle of poverty. He does not want to sell dope. Sometimes he gets so depressed. Broomstic gets moody if he is not stoned. It’s him. Broomstic get lit and fuck a bitch. You only get one chance in life. Life is just life.
Broomstic is optimistic about how many chances he has in life. He wonders who is going to tell the tale of his life. However he won’t tell anyone shit. Also he wonders if it will be the end of him if he ever catches a felony. To avoid any legal drama, Broomstic will give police an alias or a fake name. Flint Vice Squad is something he has no love for as they have no love for him. Time is getting shorter and so is his life. He wants time with his kids.
He tries to make it in this life by getting wasted. He wants to get paid off his rhymes and get stoned under the blacklight until it’s his time to go. Life is just life.
The end of Life resolves by using a religious Church of Christ television ad. This television ad says, “There’s a time and procedure for every matter. The life of Christ.”
On Stayin' Alive, Gargamel explains why his life is caught in a freestyle due to his criminal lifestyle. This song needs a 2015 remake. It's still relevant today. Stayin' Alive and the rest of the Patience album needs to be remastered.
Gargamel needs a job in order to be father his child but his life is still a drag because his life is caught in a freestyle due to his criminal lifestyle, but meanwhile Gargamel blazes up a joint up for the day and hope he exceeds and excels before he ends up in a jail cell during a sentence of incarceration. But Gargamel makes bail and gives his homies a call. He says "Fuck all ya'll that's waiting on my downfall!". He knows somehow things will never change.
The price on the narcotic drug called cocaine now has a bigger name for itself since it's inception from being introduced to the United States by the CIA. He keeps focusing on his goal. That's his aim. No one knows his lows or if he has sold his soul. So open your eyes and never try to hide your pride. It's 95 and it's all about stayin' alive henceforth the song title so on.
Patience is the title track for this album. Patience is about patience of course. In life we must learn to have patience. Patience is a virtue we must have as humans. That is how we get by without getting stressed. We deal with patience on a daily basis. The song uses funky synths and heavy beats.
Gargamel told them people there was going to be no tomorrow, but people did not want to believe him. Now they will see for themselves. Gargamel felt the time had come to give these fools a peace of his mind.
His woman got him caught up in this fuck shit by getting him into such a predicament. Now Gargamel knows his lows and can’t trust no hoe. He gets his dirt done and puts in work even if it’s do or die. He still hits those same corners wearing a black mask and gloves during robberies. Those niggaz from Selby Hood will burn your ass like 151 Bacardi.
Gargamel is tired of waiting and debating about what is going to happen next. He wonders if he is going to hell or a jail cell. Overall his life is just a mess. He wants someone to take him out of his misery by putting his black ass to rest. Every breath that he takes is murder in the making. He asks Jehovah to bless his soul. He realizes everybody dies at some point. Gargamel tells us all we need is patience throughout the song.
I Wanna Fuck is about sex of course. I Wanna Fuck is the successor track to Get Yo Booty Licked from the Selby Hood album entitled Get Yo Booty Licked released back in 1992. The Selby Hood Posse is horny as fuck and want to find some chicks to have sex with.
The Drunk is an interlude which uses a hodgepodge of samples and vocals to keep up with the theme of drunkenness. The song revolves around a drunk man singing only to have Gargamel egg him on. Of course the singing is terrible and very off key.
The very beginning starts off on a radio station being switched to another station hence the static and distortion. A drunk person soon begins singing. This lasts for a bout a minute. Gargamel tells him, “Nigga you drunk.” The interlude ends with the Happy Birthday song. Right after the Happy Birthday song is where a television ad airing the tale of a drunk driving incident is played. The sample is from a video of Miranda Stanford’s 3rd birthday party. A narrator highlights that Miranda Stanford was killed by a drunk driver.
The song Black Hippiz is also known as Black Hippiz Funk. The song is a mid tempo song that was recorded in 1995. This song also appeared as a hidden track on the Black Hippiz albums Life Sex Death and Dead Rezidentz.
Cutt is trying to stay alive. It’s nothing new. He’s still the same old hippi. Cutt tells us the year of 1995 is the year of blowin’ up on the scene. What goes up can keep going up as Cutt will be around to keep up the Black Hippiz sound.
Gettin' Low is the first posse cut at very end of Stress side of the Patience cassette. The Gettin' Low track starts off with distorted thunder and depressing piano notes playing in the background. A bird chirps. Low pitch vocals are added into the haunting sound clips of this erroneous track. However high quality sound kicks in real quick. Gettin' Low is very similar to Esham with his acid rap style. The whole track is quite eerie and brooding similar to Esham with his acid rap style. Getting low as hell off a case of bud and 5 Rickey Rue’s. Fire up the Freaky Live cassette. (Freaky Live is Flint's most wack group next to Took-N-Bone and Raw Deal.) Dogs from Selby Hood will make a loc want to get ooted. No pills or angel dust. Getting burned up with red eyes. Board the Z-Train to take a low ride with niggaz with big triggaz. Weapons are involved on this posse cut despite the typical drug references. It's no clean effort for the radio.
Gettin’ Low is the get high track of the album. So pass the nigga with the big bag o'light. Let me hit it after you. I thought you bitches knew that Broomstic can't be faded. Gettin’ Low is all about getting high and drinking alcoholic beverages.
Flint Niggaz is the second posse cut at very end of Stress of the Patience cassette. 5 funky motherfuckers are gonna flow for ya'll. We got The Living Dead, Bugsy, Pistol Whip, Nickel Bag, Stikxz, and Gargamel at the very end. This Selby Hood posse cut uses a funky selection of Afro-centric percussion.
They explain growing up in the Selby neighborhood in Flint, Michigan wasn't easy. Growing up isn't easy. Tales of dope sales are told. Not to mention the gritty raunchy sexual references. Getting out of the ghetto, tales of poverty, and escaping poverty are sort of the main theme for this posse cut. Gargamel ends this cut by saying "Flint niggaz are the wrong ones to fuck with." That's Gargamel's warning to us.
Pain starts off the Depressed side of the Patience cassette. The mood of this particular track is frankly quite depressing. The Native American Indian flute music really give Pain a smooth mellow chilling feel to the album to the dark brooding mood album. Step all over this shit.
Pain is all about feeling the stress and depression of dealing with pain. Gargamel wants us to feel the pain he has been going through in his lifetime. He has to stay alive and away from those evil spirits that he recognizes. He hopes the Lord forgives him.
Gargamel welcomes us to his world. His pain is much worse than a migraine. Shit gets so deep. Is he losing his mind from a dong a dark side creep. This lady from the Criminal Justice department of Flint Police wants Gargamel to this. Gargamel looked into her eyes and said, “My life is such a mess, you bitch” He is not at peace until he lays deceased. Fucking around with Gargamel can get your ass kicked.
The Michigan Mitten is in full effect on the song Sometimes what with the heavy bass and all those beats. The beats and bass stand out heavily.
It’s hard to make an honest working a job living especially when times are hard. D has kids that need some Similac. That’s why he would rather be deceased buried next to all his other homies. He used to brag about the things he never had, but life has been a drag since his buddy died. His homies know his pain. But no pain, no gain. That’s the way life goes sometimes.
Gargamel caught a case last night after murdering a cop. Damn! What’s the deal? He wonders how much longer he can live before he gets himself killed. He feels so much agony to the point where he wants to be buried alive. It was due to the cop he murdered that he feels so much agony.
Somebody said some shit that almost drove him to suicide. One day he was feeling mad as fuck. He can’t trust himself. But that’s what you get sometimes when acting hard.
Back On My Feet uses samples from a Scarface movie over Afro-centric beats that are rhythmic and funky. Beats, bass, samples, and percussion are what stand out on this Selby Hood song. The song is about getting back up on your feet regardless of what situation happened to you before. The song describes what goes on in the criminal infested streets of Selby Hood.
The beginning uses a sample from a Scarface movie. Scarface puts an end to all drug transactions by prohibiting them without him being involved. He wants in on all the action.
Gargamel grabs all the dope and money after a drug transaction after shooting. He just ate but is still kind of hungry. He keeps his gun loaded incase someone were to run up on him. He’s not dying if he can help that. Gargamel tells us he has to get back on his feet. He has to keep his feet on solid ground.
Cutt grabs his gat and starts blowing peoples heads off. He needs to get back on his feet so he does a jack. You know Cutt don’t give a fuck. Now it’s time to look for Cheese. Cheese is selling weed. Selby Hood kicked a lot of ass in the past.
Listen to the rhythm of the rain. Can you feel Cutt and Gargamel's pain? When it rains, it does pour. Black Hippiz must require it to rain everyday. So pass the nigga with the big bag o'light. Let me hit it after you. I thought you bitches knew that Broomstic can't be faded. Broomstic really went off flowed very good on this rap track. Cutt and Gargamel did too.
The beats used are on rain are rather thin but are super dope. If only the time and duration of Rain were extended longer, then the song would be even more enjoyable. Honestly Rain was too short of a song to have fulfilled enjoyment in.
Nuts is another posse cut on this Selby Hood album. They explain how they have balls to do the things do. All Selby Hood niggas got nuts. Gargamel felt the time had come to give these fools a peace of his mind. It was time to start chopping niggas down in the game.
Moonlightin' has a mournful vibe and a feeling of sadness along with a mood of darkness. The song is ridden with heavy bass that will knock your speakers!
It is nighttime and the moon is bright. Gargamel starts wondering if his life is what it used to be. To him, it’s not too easy being a hippi. He’s getting older. It hurts when he falls. His life is getting shorter as he lived it by the sword. He can’t afford all the things that he wants to get. He missed all the things in the hood. Gargamel is an OG from Selby Hood. Don’t be down for his state of depression. The middle of the song deals with the deaths of his homies.
It’s sad that his life is drag. He has to brag about the things that he’s never had. Gargamel is trying to make it to Alma Street (Alma Avenue) from Selby Hood to pick up a couple of pills to ease the pain inside of him. And maybe ride past Gracelawn Cemetery off Saginaw Street to throw up the peace sign to his dead homies from the past time. That’s his life. His life is nothing but life. The past times make Gargamel sad sometimes. So he tries not to think of yesteryear.
He parked his car at vertically towards Gracelawn Cemetery. Then he jumped out and put on some shades to cover his eyes from the moonlight.
Mike Jarrett is a minute long solo song of a spoken word performance performed by Mike Jarrett. Mike Jarrett was a member of Selby Hood. The song uses a slow tempo jazz sample that is perfect to play at nighttime if you are in the mood or wanting to get into the mood.
