Exploring Gerland's in Galveston, Texas again.

For all you urban explorers out there interested in urban exploration, the building located at 2402 45th Street in Galveston, Texas is none other than the former Gerland’s grocery store. Today the store sits vacant and abandoned.

Gerland’s was a grocery store that was built in 1966. The 1 story building was 25,757 square feet in size, located on a 1.79 acre lot. Gerland’s had a bakery. Gerland’s eventually expanded to be a local chain store with 3 locations spread all over Galveston.

Gerland’s became abandoned in the year of 2004. The building became a target for taggers to paint their graffiti on. Subsequently no other vandalism had occurred to the building other than urban decay and weathering. For the most part, the building was good condition despite falling victim to urban decay and weathering.

Ironically this property had no flooding from Hurricane Ike despite nearly all of Galveston being effected by that hurricane in 2008. For the most part, the Gerland’s building remained untouched or unharmed by the weather. The roof to the former Gerland’s grocery store is missing. Everything on the inside was gutted and has been scrapped by the owners. Gerland’s sat as a shell of its former self while being vacant and abandoned.

Gerland’s was up for sale in 2013. A “FOR SALE” was posted on the back of the building. Michael Martini had been at odds with the city council over various code violations. Ownership disputes plagued this property.

Miriam M. Ford sold the land property to Joyce B. Warwick on the date of 9/28/2016 via a gift deed. Since then, nothing has happened with the building. Joyce B. Warwick sold the property to a man named Michael Martini on the date of 1/1/2017. Michael Martini posted the property online to the LoopNet realty website for sale at an undisclosed price on the date of 3/27/2017. Michael Martini listed the property as a commercial property.

City of Galveston officials decided to have the grouchy store demolished after having received several complaints from neighbors. November 2019 is the city demolished Gerland’s after a wall collapsed from velocity of high winds.

Gerland's was located at 2402 45th Street, Galveston, Texas, US 77550.
