History of Ye olde Fredericksburg Negro School in Fredericksburg, Texas explored.

The old Fredericksburg Negro School was one of the few negro schools in Fredericksburg, Texas that operated during the 20th century. Not too much history is known about this negro school. Fredericksburg Negro School and White Oak Schools were the 2 negro schools operating in the city of Fredericksburg.

Fredericksburg ISD appropriated funds for the construction of a negro school which would become Fredericksburg Negro School. Foundation of this school was erected in 1877. Construction was completed later that year and the school would open in 1878. This school was a 1-8 school throughout much of the 19th century. (Ref: The Friends of Gillespie County Schools, ibid)

A new negro school was built on the foundation of the 1877 building in the year of 1922. This school is located above the foundation. Grades 8 to 12 were now included. The school closed in 1965 after racial segregation was outlawed. Today Fredericksburg Negro School is owned by Mr. Arthur Kowert and Mrs. Arthur Kowert.
