Southton Cemetery is one of the many forgotten cemeteries of San Antonio and Bexar County. This news article will explain and explore the history behind Southton Cemetery. Southton Cemetery is also known as St. Anne-Southton Cemetery and St. Ann-Torres Cemetery.
Southton Cemetery was plotted and established and plotted as a “county cemetery” circa 1838 for the settlement and town of Southton, Texas. The cemetery was later expanded and more plots were purchased in 1898. Bexar County owned this cemetery at one point.
Many grave markers belonging to Southton Cemetery were washed away in floods prior to 1925. That is because Southton Cemetery is located within the Salado Creek floodplain being that the cemetery is located right next to Salado Creek. That is why there are no burials and graves that predate 1925. There are many marked and unmarked older graves. (Ref: https://historic.one/tx/bexar-county/historic-cemetery/st-anne-southton)
There are many Catholic burials belonging to this cemetery. That is because a Catholic church called St. Anne Catholic Church uses Southton Cemetery for their burials. These Catholic burials belong to St. Anne Catholic Church/St. Ann Catholic Church. (Ref: https://www.archsa.org/parishes/st.-ann-southton)
The older graves are about 30 yards away from the gate. The newer graves are near the gate. There are many marked and unmarked older graves about 30 yards away from the gate. To access Southton Cemetery, you have to get past a gate. Close to the house located at 11978 Southton Road is a private road which is gated by a metal chain link fence. This gate may or may not be locked. (Ref: https://www.findagrave.com/cemetery/2332620/southton-cemetery)
Interestingly enough, Southton Cemetery is not owned by the City of San Antonio or Bear County but is instead owned by a company called Lehman Grain. According to Bexar CAD data, Lehman Grain owns the property rights and mineral rights to Southton Cemetery. Lehman Grain and Reed S. Lehman have owned Southton Cemetery since 1960. Lehman Grain has owned Southton Cemetery since 2007. (Ref: https://bexar.trueautomation.com/clientdb/Property.aspx?cid=110&prop_id=337200)

I've been to the graveyard recently. It is mowed by volunteers but otherwise very little maintenance on the graves except for a few.
