Now the Espada School is not to be confused with the Catholic Church operated Mission Espada School. That is an entirely separate school.
Espada School was operated by San Antonio ISD from the middle of the 19th century to the early 20th century. Espada School was established and constructed as a one-room schoolhouse situated at the Henry Graf place at 8902 Graf Road in 1855. The school did not own the land but rented from Henry Graf. He let the school district use his land for school purposes. Henry Graf donated lumber for the school also. (Ref: https://npgallery.nps.gov/GetAsset/e390f8f1-2a60-4611-90a6-03fea6eb015d)
The Espada School building relocated from the Henry Graf place to residential property at 9539 Espada Road sometime during the 1890s. This property was owned by Miguel Gutierrez This one-room schoolhouse was situated in front of the residence at 9539 Espada Road from around the turn of the 19th century to 1914. The Espada School was reconstructed in 1914 in front of the residence at 9539 Espada Road. This schoolhouse replaced the previous schoolhouse which was once located on the Henry Graf place. Part of the lumber in Henry Graf's present barn was from this building. The schoolhouse reconstructed in 1914 was 100 feet south of the present building closer towards the present fence line.
