Jeff Mills was clearly inspired by French techno when he produced and recorded Jeff Mills – Force Universelle EP back in 1997. Notice how the song titles use French words. Division De Lignes and La Force are some examples. Jeff Mills was paying homage, respect, and tribute towards French techno hence the French theme. One can clearly see Jeff had a good time in France.
La Force uses distorted bass lines over high quality techno beats and blips. However this song gets tiresome and annoying very quickly. The distortion of this song doesn’t help either.
Division De Lignes is driven by a heavy powered kick drum, shakers, and submarine sonars. Kicks are whats make this song so awesome. The song uses a quirky synewave styled electronic soundscape over warped chords. High quality techno beats are what give Division De Lignes an edge of techno music. Jeff uses minimal techno on Division De Lignes.
Tribal house meets minimal techno on Leader Rouge. Jeff uses a blend of tribal house beats over quiet minimal techno.
I rate this EP 4/5****.
