History of Macias Grocery in San Antonio, Texas explained.

This news article will explain the history on one of San Antonio’s forgotten grocery stores known as Macias Grocery.

Not too many people know this or are even aware of this but the 8-acre triangle of empty land was once a baseball field which was owned by Macias Grocery. The 8-acre triangle of empty land was home to Macias Grocery, a soft ball field, and a baseball field. Now what is unique and interesting about Macias Grocery is that this grocery store had boasted both and a soft ball field and baseball field.


Ramon Macias (Ramon L Macias) was the owner and CEO of Macias Grocery. Now Macias Grocery was a family-owned grocery store. Some of the employees of Macias Grocery were Rosalinda Macias, Gilbert L Macias, Alfredo L Macias, Hilario L Macias, Maria A Macias, Maximo F Macias Jr, James Macias, Armando Macias, and Fred Flores. Macias Grocery specialized in selling fruit.


Alfonso Chapa and his wife, Socorro R. Chapa, sold 9 acres of their land to Ramon L Macias on a warranty deed with vendor’s lien for $21,000 dollars on the date of November 22, 1972. Ramon L Macias would open up a family-operated grocery store called Macias Grocery in 1973. Macias Grocery specialized in selling fruit. (Ref: Bexar County Land Deeds, Volume 6955, Pages 918 & 919)


Macias Grocery operated inside of a structure which formally served as a single family dwelling that was constructed in the year of 1960. The single family dwelling was zoned as a single family residence. Alfonso Chapa and his wife Socorro R. Chapa lived here for many years. (Ref: https://clustrmaps.com/a/55e3h/)


However by 1982, Macias Grocery had a number of tax liens filed against their business by the State of Texas for $1,718.35. The state tax liens were worth hundreds of dollars. Macias Grocery was known as Macias Fruits & Grocery by this time. The grocery store had changed names a couple of times. Macias Grocery was also known as Macias Fruits and Macias Fruit.

The 285th District Court of Bexar ordered Ramon L Macias and Macias Grocery to pay the State of Texas a judgment of $15,317.39 which included attorney’s fees payable to the Law Offices of John M. Killiam and plaintiff. (Ref: Bexar County Land Deeds, Document Number 482242)




However Macias Grocery continued to operate for a number of years afterwards or at least after the judgement was payed off and debts were satisfied.

On October 1, 1987, Ramon L Macias sold the property Macias Grocery was located on to Vincent A. Gillette, and Abel A. Dominguez on a deed of trust for the amount of $8,000 dollars total. (Ref: Bexar County Land Deeds, Volume 4170, Page 165)



Ramon L Macias sold the rest of his family’s property to Vincent A. Gillette, and Abel A. Dominguez on a substitute trustee’s deed on the date of September 4, 1990. The time Ramon L Macias property sold the rest of his family’s property was at 2:32 PM on September 4, 1990. (Ref: Bexar County Land Deeds, Volume 4906, Pages 1458-1462)





Vincent A. Gillette sold the former soft ball field and base ball field to MVG Properties, LTD on a special warranty deed on the date of December 28, 1995. MVG Properties, LTD currently owns the 9-acre triangle of empty land bordering South Presa Street and I 410. Macias Grocery had already been shut down by that point. Macias Grocery was located at 9506 South Presa Street, San Antonio, Texas, US 78223.
