Environmental assessments for Phase I and Phase II of 1701 Sterling Avenue, Elkhart, Indiana in progress.

Assessments for Phase I and Phase II assessments of 1701 Sterling Avenue in Elkhart, Indiana in currently in progress and the process is not yet completed. An agreement has been reached where  a site access agreement granting environmental contractors procured through MACOG access to the site to do environmental testing and investigation.

There will be continued environmental testing and further site investigation at 1701 Sterling Avenue which was the the former G&W Industries. This property also housed several businesses such as SUMMIT ENTERPRISES INC, SHEILEN INDUSTRIES INC, Dylan Designs, STERLING RENTALS L.L.C., and metal fabricator Advanced Cutting Technology.


The City of Elkhart received a $600,000 Assessment Grant for Phase 1, Phase II, and further site investigation through MACOG for Regional Brownfields on April 2021. The five sites in Elkhart are; 700 Block of South Main Street, 1701 Sterling Avenue, 1101 East Beardsley Avenue, 511 Division Street, and 2101 South Main Street. The Commission approved a site access agreement granting environmental contractors procured through MACOG access to the site to do environmental testing and investigation.

The Commission accepted five vacant lots that were unsold from the 2019 tax sale; four of these parcels are located within the Sterling East Neighborhood and one parcel is located within the River Vista Neighborhood.

At the Redevelopment Commission meeting, the Commissioners approved resurfacing, lighting, and a drainage project for John Weaver Parkway. Mr. Schaffer of Public Works confirmed that a grant was received from the State of Indiana-Community Crossings Matching Grant to pay for the resurfacing and funds for drainage improvements came from City Council. The Commission made several decisions regarding property they owned. Staff was authorized to negotiate the terms of the sale of 213 Jefferson Street. At 112 Division Street, it was decided to rent out the units on a twelve-month lease. Approval was given to purchase jersey barriers to improve site security at 1101 East Beardsley Avenue and 1701 Sterling Avenue
