History of the Civic Park Lounge/Civic Park Cocktail Lounge in Flint, Michigan explored.

The Civic Park Lounge/Civic Park Cocktail Lounge is one of the most forgotten lounges of Flint, Michigan. Not too much history or information about this lounge can be found online or offline. The news article will attempt to cover the history of Civic Park Lounge/Civic Park Cocktail Lounge in the best way possible.



Civic Park Lounge/Civic Park Cocktail Lounge was located at the infamous most dangerous street corner of Dayton Street & Dupont Street in the King neighborhood of Flint, Michigan.

According to the Genesee County Clerk/Register internet database, Civic Park Bar occupied the same location as Civic Park Cocktail Lounge and Da Spot once occupied which was 2407 Dupont Street. Flint, Michigan is no stranger to beer taverns and bar taverns such as Civic Park Bar, Civic Park Tavern, Civic Park Lounge/Civic Park Cocktail Lounge, Cheezy Ice Cream, D'S CP BAR, and Da Spot once occupied Dupont Street. So that is no surprise.  


Civic Park Lounge/Civic Park Cocktail was originally a barber shop prior to becoming a lounge. Dave Barber states, “The barber shop that switched into Ski Haus, and later on, Jack Gilbert's Wayside Inn and the Civic Park Lounge. John Hoenicke established Civic Park Lounge/Civic Park Cocktail Lounge in the Civic Park neighborhood of Flint, Michigan in 1976. Civic Park Lounge/Civic Park Cocktail Lounge was one of the more well-established middle class lounges in Flint which served cocktails and beer.

John Hoenicke and his wife were one of the operators of making their own Flint Coney Island sauce from scratch. His wife begun to freeze some of the sauce for sale to customers to take out and take home. History was made at Civic Park Lounge in 1984. John Hoenicke registered “Flint’s Original Old Greek’s Coney Island Recipe” as an officially recognized trademark. Civic Park Lounge/Civic Park Cocktail Lounge was shut down and had closed in 2006 due to a court order regarding the usage of unauthorized space. John Hoenicke and his wife apparently had opened opened their businesses in leased commercial spots without proper permission and permits. So John Hoenicke decided to close down Civic Park Lounge/Civic Park Cocktail Lounge in 2006.

Sadly Civic Park Lounge/Civic Park Cocktail Lounge burned down in 2008 in an arson incident. The building was set on fire at night. In many of the arson cases in Flint, nobody had seen or heard anything. This case of arson was not unusual. Now this arson case was never solved. Nobody had seen anything or heard anything.

Civic Park Lounge/Civic Park Cocktail Lounge was demolished by Genesee County Land Bank in July 2009. Nothing remained of Civic Park Lounge/Civic Park Cocktail Lounge and surrounding businesses by the fall of 2009. Genesee County Land Bank currently owns the Civic Park Lounge/Civic Park Cocktail Lounge property.
