[Far Rockaway residents and a local lawmaker have asked the Queens office of the city's Buildings Department to investigate the conversion of the old Jefferson Hotel at 29-14 Lewmay Road, from a summer facility into a year-round residence.

Councilman Waiter Ward (D-Ho-ward Beach) in a letter to Philip Olin, head of the Queens office, said be has been informed by members of the Seagirt Civic Association that the hotel, which has been vacant for many months, is being converted illegally. Ward said that as far as he knew no certificate of occupancy has been issued for the conversion, nor have any permits been issued for repairs to the old building.

"Despite the fact the work is apparently being done without official sanction," said Ward, "it appears the rooms are being publicized for rentals and I understand, there are signs of transient occupancy." Ward also noted that members of the civic group are upset because some of about 25 summer bungalows on Beach 24th, Beach 25th, Beach 26th and Beach 30th Sts. are being occupied, despite the fact they have not been winterized.

"There is no certificate of occupancy for these buildings," Ward said, "and no permits for electrical and heating equipment Some of these summer bungalows are being illegally winterized and many persons are living in these buildings without heat or adequate electric or plumbing facilities under dangerous conditions."]

Jefferson Hotel was demolished in 1995. A permit for demolition was issued on the date of 10/30/1995 and was valid until April 26, 1996. 300 or more cubic yards of fill dirt were proposed to be transplanted from an off-site location. The permit was given to Team Structure Co Inc, which was represented by Maciej Kuczynski. (Ref: https://clustrmaps.com/a/oihqu/)
