Bastrop Center Union School history forgotten.

Center Union School is one of the many forgotten schools of Bastrop County. Center Union School is located in Smithville, Texas  Only local Smithville citizens know about this school or are even aware of its history and knowledge. 

Center Union School was built as a single story wooden frame white building constructed out of lumber that served as a negro school in the year of 1902. Center Union School was a negro school which had educated African American students at the beginning of the 20th century. Bastrop County Public Schools oversaw and operated Center Union School from 1902 to 1962.

TSHA reports that in 1905, Bastrop County Public Schools hired one teacher to teach 85 students. Center Union School was a one-teacher school the beginning of the 20th century. The school would grow to become a two-teacher school later in the 20th century.

Center Union School consolidated with Smithville Independent School District in 1962. Center Union School would later become a community center that is now maintained by Bastrop County Development Services.
