History of Providence High School in Kentucky forgotten.

Providence High School is one of the many forgotten schools in the state of Kentucky. Only a few people such as local citizens knew about this school. This news article will discuss the history of Providence High School in Kentucky.

Providence High School was a school operated by the Providence Independent School District from 1917 to 2006. Webster County Schools operated the school from 2006 to 2007. Providence High School closed in 2007 after Webster County Schools shut it down after the merger.

Providence High School was built in 1916 and first opened in 1917. Its first class graduated in 1918. The main building was built in 1916. The addition behind the main building was built in 1917. The gymnasium was located behind the school. Later additions were added to the building over the years. School enrollment was fairly small usually. Between 100 and 130 students were enrolled per year at Providence High School. Student population was definitely below 200 students. Providence High School was a small rural school that was two stories tall.

The gymnasium located behind the school was called the Dog Gymnasium. Sometimes the gymnasium was referred to as Dog House. The gymnasium was a small one story tall brick building.

The last class graduated in 2006 when the Providence schools merged with the Webster County School District (Webster County Schools). Although last class graduated in 2006, Webster County Schools continued to operate the school from 2006 to 2007. Webster County Schools shut down Providence High School in 2007 due to low enrollment. By 2008 the school was abandoned.

Within the next few years, Providence High School was sold to Big Dogs Gym & Fitness. Big Dogs Gym & Fitness has assumed ownership since then.

In 2013 the school was demolished for whatever reason. Only the gymnasium, flagpole and sidewalk to the school remain to this day. The sidewalk that connected to the main building now connects to the Dog House. It is interesting to see such an old rural school in good condition. There are still many signs, banners, and papers hanging up from back when school was in session. There is an interesting set up inside the school. A lot of these older schools were built right next door to their founding schoolhouses.

In 2014 the school gym was renovated and revitalized into a gym and fitness center called Big Dogs Gym & Fitness. This was a part of rural renewal.

Providence High School is located on 302 West Main Street, Providence, Kentucky, US 42450.
