Yvette Michelle - My Dream is an album filled with good ol' hip hop soul. The album filled with bangin’ hip hop beats produced by Hot 97 legend Funkmaster Flex from NYC (New York City). As a matter of fact, he served as executive producer for this whole album hence the East Coast sound. Full Force produced the whole album though. She laces these soulful songs with her sultry sexy vocals. Yvette Michele (Yvette Michelle) is Brooklyn’s most slept on talent. Her sound is similar to Mary J. Blige.
Loud Records did Yvette Michelle, Davina and Adriana Evans dirty. All of their albums dropped in 1997 and received little to no promotion. Loud Records didn't know how to push R&B/Soul correctly like Def Jam, Concord, Atlantic, or Stax. Apparently anytime a hip hop label ventures out to do R&B somehow, somewhere, it ends up flopping unexpectedly. That is what led this album to be highly slept on.
Yvette Michele could have been destined to be the next Mary J. Blige had Loud Records promoted her album correctly. She could have overcome Mary's longevity as well. But Loud Records had to drop the ball on her thus ending her career over there.
Everyday & Everynight is a song of how Yvette is head over heels for a radio DJ that she is crazy for. She has fallen in love with this DJ.
She is crazy about this particular radio DJ. Yvette remembers the very first time that she saw him. They were at a club when hey first met up. She wants to know all about him. That's all.
Every night, every day, and every time Yvette hears him play, she goes crazy. She can't get him off her mind. She wants to get to know his name and go out on a date. His music is mesmerizing to the point where he’s got her fantasizing. His love feels so good to her, yeah. He’s got her soakin wet on this night.
DJ Keep Playin’ is where Funkmaster Flex showcases to us on the wheels of steel his DJ skills while Yvette sings away with her soulful sultry voice. Full Force produced this song along with Funkmaster Flex. The song represents Brooklyn’s finest.
This song uses some East Coast hip hop production with its loud brash beats and DJ vinyl scratches. The vinyl cuts stand out the most. Hip hop samples are used of course.
I’m Not Feelin You is a song about how Yvette stands up for herself when she is not feeling something. She lets us know what’s not her style.
The first part of the song deals with her not feeling someone. She says being a player has never been her style. Playerism is not a part of her style too. Yvette is the type of women who stands up for herself when she is not feeling something or feeling someone in particular. Read these lyrics as an example.:
[Chorus]
I'm not feeling you
No matter what you do
No matter what you say
I'm leaving anyway
[Verse 1]
You know how I'm living
Playas never been my style
This time you're not forgiven so
Don't try to change my mind
[Pre-Chorus]
I know you want me
And I know you want me bad
I know you're thinkin' of me
It's my turn not to care
And that's why
So matter what that person says or does, she is leaving that person. So don’t try to change her mind because this time you are not forgiven.
The song Crazy was a radio hit in Brooklyn which became favorable among hip hop heads. The song even had its own music video. Of course this song was released back when 90’s R&B/soul ruled radio stations. Crazy samples The Jones Girls - Dance Turn Into Romance.
I rate this album, 4/5****!
