Behind the story of Barclay Woods. Another one of Austin’s vanished trailer parks.

Barclay Woods is one of Austin’s vanished trailer parks that seems to have been long forgotten and has faded away with time. This news story will unveil the history behind the Barclay Woods trailer park. After extensive hours of research, the property had gone through several owners as years passed.

Barclay Woods was established on private residential land owned by LelAnne Anderson. She had owned the 7 acre property since 1942 with Johnie Barclay. The property was once home to a chicken farm owned by LelAnne Anderson and Johnie Barclay with Leland Barclay acting as a manager. LelAnne Anderson and Johnie Barclay first established a trailer park called Barclay Woods Trailer Park in 1979.  The Barclay Woods Trailer Park started out with one single-wide trailer serving as a mobile home which was owned by LelAnne Anderson.

According to a multi-service contract deed between City of Austin and LelAnne Anderson from 1980, one mobile home was moved onto the property. Additional electric service was connected to the mobile home which was a single-wide trailer. The first single-wide trailer was owned by LelAnne Anderson. The multi-service contract deed shows “one mobile home located at 1196 Camp Craft Road”. (Ref: Travis County Public Records - Real Estate, Volume 6928, Page 988)

The address for Barclay Woods Trailer Park was 1196 Camp Craft Road, Austin, Texas, US 78746 which is now 1196 Barclay Road, Austin, Texas, US 78746. Barclay Road was formerly Camp Craft Road before being changed to the current name known today.

A half-street called City View Street was plotted in 1983 in the Lost Creek neighborhood. City View Street connected to the trailer giving both access to Lost Creek and Woods Of Westlake.

According to an aerial map of Barclay Woods from 1985 provided by NETR Online, there were 2 visible single-wide trailers visible from aerial view in the sky. (Ref: Travis County topographical map of 1985 online at NETR Historic Aerials)

They seemed to have plans on moving more mobile home units onto the property. Another single-wide trailer, which as a mobile home, was moved onto the property in. A concrete porch with a wood deck facing west was established. A total of 4 trailers were located on the property by the end of the 1980s.

LelAnne Anderson sold her land to Glenn T. Stevenson in 1992. Glenn T. Stevenson was given full property right the same year. In 1994, part of the trailer park property became part of the Johnie Barclay Estate which was managed by Leland Barclay and Diane Turner.

Land for Barclay Woods Trailer Park was later conveyed to Megan D. Harris and Adam Jefferey Harris by Glenn T. Stevenson on the date of July 27, 2000 on a general warranty deed. Ownership of Barclay Woods was transferred to Megan D. Harris. (Ref: Travis County Public Records - Real Estate, Document No. 2000121184)

Barclay Woods Trailer Park would later become Barclay Woods in 2000. In 2001, the property was divided into 12 lots for what would become known today as Barclay Heights. Barclay Heights now serves as a subdivision for Woods of Westlake aka Woods of Westlake Hills. (Ref: Travis County Public Records - Real Estate, Document No. 200700129)

An additional 2.263 acres of a land tract from Leland Barclay and Glenn T. Stevenson was conveyed to Megan D. Harris in the year of 2002. (Ref: Travis County Public Records - Real Estate, Document No. 2007101308)

In 2004, Megan D. Harris, Adam Jefferey Harris, Leanne B. Anderson, Shirley Ruth Sarris, Ruth Shirley (Shirley Ruth), and William M Newton were reported to be living on the property. A total of 4 trailers were located at what was then Barclay Woods.

Megan D. Harris sold the Barclay Woods property for a whopping $6.6 million dollars in 2007 to Barclay Hill Development (now Barclay Homeowners Association) and City of Austin. Land for Barclay Woods Trailer Park was later conveyed to City of Austin for water easement purposes. (Ref: Travis County Public Records - Real Estate, Document No. 2007186248)

Barclay Woods Trailer Park was located at 1196 Camp Craft Road, Austin, Texas, US 78746. Today the address would be 1600 Barclay Drive, Austin, Texas, US 78746. Of course, however, the current address is 4901 Barclay Heights Court, Austin, Texas, US 78746.
