Victory for Montopolis Negro School celebrated.

A victory celebration was held at 500 Montopolis Drive, Austin, Texas on the date of Saturday, February 16, 2019. The celebration was VICTORY CELEBRATION - SAVING MONTOPOLIS NEGRO SCHOOL. History of the school and church was shared at the celebration. Fred McGhee narrated and discussed the history for Montopolis Negro School.

For three straight years, the Montopolis Neighborhood Association and other supporting groups fought to save the Historic Negro School from being demolished by a real estate developer.

On January 22, 2019, the City of Austin’s Special Commission voted to purchase the Historic Negro School through eminent domain.

The building at 500 Montopolis Drive served as the Montopolis Negro School from 1935 until 1962 ad as the home of the Montopolis Church of Christ from 1967 until a few years ago. The Montopolis Negro School is an important artifact of segregated education in Austin, Del Valle, and Travis County. Montopolis Negro School functioned not only as a place for education, but also as a church, community center, and gathering place.
