Zapp - Playin' Kinda Ruff / Do You Really Want An Answer? is one of the many overlooked singles from 1982. The single was overlooked due to the success of Dance Floor and Doo Wa Ditty (Blow That Thing).
Playin’ Kinda Ruff deals with the rough reality of daily life. Life is not always easy nor is it always fair. Life is imperfect. It’s the daily blues.
Roger wakes up every morning to hear his neighbors screaming. His alarm clock is ringing. He wants to lay back down. Now he’s got such a sweet lady.Sometimes he wonders why she sticks around because the pieces just don't fall in place and add up. It sure is getting tough and rough out here.
In Verse 2, there is a missing lyric to the lyrics “Lift that bale, tote that barge”. The missing lyric here is “Lift that bale, tote that barge/show boat” which is originally from the song “Old Man River” in the 1927 musical Show Boat.
He needs some money and a job. The man is on his back 8 hours of day. Sometimes he just wants to quit but he knows he can’t. Lord it’s rough out here. His wife and children are depending on him. He can't duck life’s responsibilities.
Do You Really Want An Answer? is a song about Roger wondering where that girl went. Do you really want to know? Do you really want an answer?
He sits by his window alone and listens to the breeze go. It seems like just yesterday he had everything in this whole wide world. Roger asks, “Where is that girl? Won't somebody tell me?”
Roger asks himself, “Is this really happening? Am I alone tonight?” He has such a lovely lady. She gave him everything I ever needed with love. What kind of fool was he to let her go? Somebody tell him. Where can she be?
Is there any room for reconsideration? His whole world depends on reconciliation. He asks, “Have I lost you, girl? Are you gone for good?” Somebody told Roger they saw her at the club sitting with a friend. She seems to have found another love. Roger is heartbroken by all this.
I rate this single 4/5****!!
