History of Parita United Methodist Church in San Antonio, Texas explored.

Parita United Methodist Church was established as a small church on New Sulphur Springs Road just east of San Antonio in 1912.

Emma Pririe and Mamie Pririe donated land to what was Campbell Methodist Episcopal Church on the date of July 11, 1912. Parita United Methodist Church was first known as Campbell Methodist Episcopal Church. The name of Campbell Methodist Episcopal Church would be later changed to Parita Methodist Episcopal Church. This church would support a small Methodist congregation. The church operated on a full-time basis in the work of Jesus H Christ regardless of numbers. Parita United Methodist Church was a church with a small vision. They don’t catch the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit comes to them. Parita United Methodist Church had a supportive yet small congregation with over a hundred years of history and worship. Parita United Methodist Church was reconstructed as a residential building in 1942. An exterior wall was constructed inside the church that year. The living area was 3,102 square feet in size. (Ref: https://bexar.trueautomation.com/clientdb/Property.aspx?cid=110&prop_id=336488)

Tom Campbell, Pat H. Campbell, and H. A Ferrill donated more land to Parita United Methodist Church on the date of July 31, 1951. Tom Campbell, Pat H. Campbell, and H. A Ferrill were trustees of Parita United Methodist Church at the time. (Ref: Bexar County Deeds, Volume 3063, Page 563)



Several acres of land were donated to the church by a former member who was a doctor named Dr. Ellen C. Cover in 1958. Dr. Ellen C. Cover was a sole femme. She would donated several more acres of land to the church as the years went along. (Ref: Bexar County Deeds, Volume 4143, Page 275)



Toward the end of 1980 there were only 30 attending members of this church. At the beginning of 1981 there were only 40 attending members of this church. The church was still located in a rural setting. 


Parita United Methodist Church was involved in a lawsuit regarding a landownership dispute with David Buchhorn and Margaret Buchhorn in 2003. Parita United Methodist Church was listed as the plaintiff. David Buchhorn and Margaret Buchhorn did not own or have any claim to the church land. In the agreed final declaratory judgement Parita United Methodist Church was the simple owner of the “subject tract”. A judge awarded Parita United Methodist Church a 2.008 acre tract of land by a quit claim deed. (Ref: Bexar County Official Public Records - Real Estate, Document No. 20030133433)


The congregation of Parita United Methodist Church voted to disband and form the new Resurrection United Methodist Church in November 2005. That is why Parita United Methodist Church shut down. (Ref: https://www.wilsoncountynews.com/articles/resurrection-umc-bids-farewell-to-lee/)

“Rev. John Lee was appointed to the former Parita United Methodist Church as a first-year pastor in June 2004. Under his guidance, the congregation voted to disband and form the new Resurrection United Methodist Church in November 2005.”

Parita United Methodist Church sold their building and property to a woman named Rebecca L Claridge on the date of 11/14/2008 on a warranty deed. Rebecca L Claridge currently owns this property. (Ref: Bexar County Official Public Records - Real Estate, Document No. 20080246152)
