Exploring of what Northwoods Cave is in Austin, Texas. (Revisited)

Northwoods Cave is one of the lesser known and forgotten caves of Austin, Texas that is not as widely known. Northwoods Cave is also known as Northwood Cave and North Woods Cave. This news article will explain what Northwoods Cave is.

Northwoods Cave is a cave located in North Austin several miles from downtown. Northwoods Cave has a setback distance of 150 feet. 24% of the surface cover is covered by soil with a very small amount of fragmented rock. (Ref: https://books.google.com/books?id=kEkLOqpCk78C&pg=PA395)

Now there are species of endangered karst invertebrates and endangered species that are part of the karst features of Northwoods Cave. Several of these karst features occur in clusters such as Northwoods Cave, Four Points Cave, Northwoods cave clusters Four Points cave clusters and McNeil cave clusters. The earliest Northwoods Cave was explored was in the year of 1940. Both researchers Gertsch & Mulaik were the first two people known to have discovered Northwoods Cave. Researchers Gertsch & Mulaik went exploring to go excavating for Cicurina spiders from caves in Travis County. One of the caves they excavated for Cicurina spiders was inside of Northwoods Cave. A species of Texas spiders called Cicurina varians were discovered to be inhabiting by Northwoods Cave by researchers Gertsch & Mulaik in 1940. (Ref: https://www.gbif.org/species/127855603)

Northwoods Cave is located somewhere near Parmer Lane and McNeil Road, Austin, Texas, US. The clusters of Northwood cave cluster and McNeil cave cluster occur in close proximity to each other in the vicinity of Walnut Creek near Howard Lane and McNeil Drive in North Austin.
