History behind the Medina River Bridge on Old Quintana Road in Von Ormy, Texas explained.

The Medina River Bridge on Old Quintana Road in Von Ormy, Texas is one of Bexar County’s lesser known bridges which hardly anyone remembers. This is the Old Quintana Road Bridge. This news article will explain what this bridge served as.

Proposals for erecting two new iron bridges on the Medina, one at the Losoya Crossing and the other at the Quintana Crossing were opened July 24, 1888 by the Bexar County Commissioners.  The contract was awarded to James Reed for a price of $13,990. (Ref: Engineering Record, Building Record, and Sanitary Engineer, 1888)

A Bexar Commissioner ordered the Medina River Bridge on Old Quintana Road to be dismantled and removed from its present location on May 15, 1952. A sale took place on Monday, May 19, 1952 at 10:30 o'clock AM in the Commissioner's Court Room at the Bexar County Courthouse. (Ref: San Antonio Light Newspaper, May 15, 1952)

NOTICE OF SALE NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN THAT THE UNDERSIGNED

Special Commissioner will sell at Public Auction one Steel Truss Bridge, 8 panels, 18 foot roadway, total length 152 feet, located on Quintana Road over the Medina River in Commissioner's District No. 1. Bridge to be dismantled and removed from it's present location. The bridge site shall be left in clean condition after removal of bridge. Said sale to take place on Monday, May 19, 1952 at 10:30 o'clock a. m. in the Commissioner's Court Room at the Bexar County Courthouse. Said sale subject to the approval of the Commissioners' Court. The Court reserves the right to reject any and all bids.

This was because the I 35 bridge was built 2 blocks adjacent to the Medina River Bridge on Old Quintana Road. The I 35 bridge rendered the Old Quintana Road Bridge obsole.te as this bridge had more lanes. The Old Quintana Road Bridge was bypassed in 1957.
