History behind the Old Somerset Road Bridge in Von Ormy, Texas explained.

The Old Somerset Road Bridge in Von Ormy, Texas is one of Bexar County’s lesser known bridges which hardly anyone remembers. This bridge was once known as Garza’s Crossing Bridge. This news article will explain what this bridge served as.


A community known as Garza’s Crossing was located at the intersection of Old Somerset Road and the Medina River. Garza’s Crossing, also known at times as Garzas and Paso de las Garzas, is at the intersection of Old Somerset Road and the Medina River in southwest Bexar County. The Old Somerset Road Bridge was a concrete stringer bridge with steel railings over Medina River on Old Somerset Road which was built in the year 1914. The total length of this bridge was 145 feet. Old Somerset Road was later surpassed in 1990 and demolished in 1995 due to aging and deteriorating physical condition. (Ref: https://bridgehunter.com/tx/bexar/bh90035/)

The Old Somerset Road Bridge was located on large parcel of land owned by Hortense Herrera. This 30 acre tract owned by Hortense Herrera is located in southern Bexar County on the northern side of the Medina River, 2.4 miles south of Loop 410 off of Somerset Road. The entry to the property is on the abandoned Old Somerset Road which tails off to the west of Somerset Road just before the Garza’s Crossing Bridge.
